Event Details

From June 4th to November 1st
Opening : June 4th at 6PM

The Dora Maar Cultural Center is delighted to feature an exclusive presentation of the creative partnership between the world-renowned African American author James Baldwin (1924–1987) and the French artist Yoran Cazac (1938–2005). This collaboration culminated in the unique and deeply personal illustrated book, Little Man, Little Man: A Story of Childhood.

As Baldwin’s only book inspired by a younger audience, it draws from the writer’s own childhood memories in Harlem, and provides a moving portrait of the neighborhood and its people in the context of the post-Civil Rights era.

Originally published in 1976, Little Man, Little Man eventually fell out of print and into obscurity. In 1996, while researching at Yale University, the book was rediscovered by Nicholas Boggs (Dora Maar Resident, 2019), leading to a subsequent 2018 republication in collaboration with Duke University Press.

By reuniting these illustrations with the history of their creation, the DMCC highlights the enduring legacy of two artists who navigated the unexpected intersections of African American literature and French visual art. The exhibition invites the viewer to explore this rare dialogue between the written word and the drawn image—a testament to a friendship that profoundly marked both men and transcended borders and disciplines.
