THE DORÉE SOCIETY

The Dorée Society is an exclusive opportunity for core supporters of the Dora Maar Cultural Center to advance its mission by enriching the collective spirit of these historic properties, to live alongside artists in residency in the exquisite village of Ménerbes, and to experience the cultural enrichment, inspiration, and respite for the soul that Mrs. Negley found when she lived here.

A Sabbatical for Your Soul

The deep practice of an artist is a way of being in the everyday world. An artist needs moments of retreat, quiet reflection, and thoughtful encounters. To participate in the creative life of the world, one needs time to stop, to reflect and to be replenished. One needs a sabbatical.

The Dorée Society at the Hôtel de Tingry plays on the French word for “golden” which fittingly describes these exclusive and limited memberships at the Dora Maar Cultural Center. The Dorée Society invites supporters to join the DMCC community of artists and scholars and engage with them across the broad spectrum of the humanities. We seek to inspire the artists within us all.

Limited to thirty-two members, the Dorée Society plays a key role in continuing the mission and vision of the DMCC. Support from our members helps to sustain the prestigious artist residency program, the lively calendar of events and exhibitions, and original happenings globally. As ambassadors, our members play a vital role expanding the impact and reputation of the DMCC. We invite the Dorée Society members to stay at the magnificent Hotel de Tingry, a four-bedroom 18th century mansion where American arts patron, Nancy Brown Negley lived for 13 years.

As a Dorée Society member, your annual sabbatical at Hotel de Tingry begins with a welcome reception hosted by the DMCC Director and the local arts community. Hotel de Tingry has four enormous en suite air-conditioned bedrooms, a well-stocked library, an art filled salon, a jewel of a boudoir, a formal dining room, a large chef’s kitchen, and a convenient summer kitchen in the Orangerie which services the elegant private pool.

More about the bedrooms:

  • Nancy: The intimate Nancy room offers guests a beautiful view of the hotel terrace, the orangery and the Luberon plains in the background. In the bathroom, the window gives a glimpse of the garden belonging to Dora Maar, Picasso’s artist and muse between 1936 and 1943.
  • Eleonore: Spacious and bright, this room in soft yellow-orange tones opens directly onto the terrace of the Hôtel de Tingry. The spacious bathroom is equipped with a large bathtub and offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Parc Naturel Régional du Lubéron.
  • Theodora: Comprising a double bedroom and a large study, the Théodora suite welcomes you into a peaceful, hushed atmosphere, with a sweeping view of Dora Maar’s Mediterranean gardens below. An extra bed in the study can accommodate an extra person.
  • Nicolas: The honey yellow bedroom and bathroom with the large windows overlooks the Luberon National Park. The immensity of nature is so captivating that you’ll be lost in contemplation without even realizing it.
