Arko Datto transitioned from mathematical physics to contemporary art, blending analytical rigor with a deeply human perspective. His work explores forced migration, techno-fascism, digital surveillance, and disappearing landscapes, weaving interconnected narratives about the existential pressures of our time. Through long-term projects, he builds immersive, layered worlds, pushing the boundaries of still and moving images. Datto’s practice spans photography, film, video, and installation, merging documentary traditions with experimental and essayistic approaches. His projects, published in TIME, National Geographic, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker, challenge conventional ways of seeing. He has received grants from the Prince Claus Fund, Pulitzer Center, and IDFA Bertha Fund. His exhibitions include Fotografia Europea, Light Work, SFO Museum, and Hamburger Bahnhof. He has published three photo books: Pik-nik (2018), Mannequin (2018), and Snakefire (2021). As a curator, he collaborates with Galleri Image, Kochi Biennale, Obscura Photography Festival, and Chennai Photo Biennale.
