Jeremy Thurlow

Composer & Musician

Jeremy Thurlow is a unique voice in today’s musical scene: innovative, soulful, lyrical; with deep roots in the ancient but very much of today.  Described by Henri Dutilleux as ‘extremely seductive… with real freshness, lightness, and innovative élan’, his music has been performed by the BBC Philharmonic, the Fitzwilliam and Kreutzer Quartets, Aronowitz Ensemble, BBC Singers, Sequenza, and Peter Sheppard Skaerved among many others, and was awarded the George Butterworth Prize. Recent work includes concertos for cello, flute and natural horn, chamber works inspired by Virginia Woolf, John Keats and Rabindranath Tagore, and a portrait of Orfordness’ historic lighthouse. He is currently writing an opera based on Dina Nayeri’s The ungrateful refugee. His writings include a monograph on Henri Dutilleux and a study of Messiaen’s Catalogue d’Oiseaux. He broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, and also performs as a pianist, especially in chamber music. Jeremy Thurlow is a Fellow of Robinson College, University of Cambridge.
