Alex Niemi

Poet & Translator

Alex Niemi is a translator and poet whose translations include For the Shrew and Hekate by Anna Glazova, The Endless Week by Laura Vazquez, and The John Cage Experiences by Vincent Tholomé. Her translation of For the Shrew won the 2023 Heldt Prize for Best Translation and the 2023 AATSEEL Prize for Best Poetry Translation into English. She is a 2023 National Endowment for the Arts translation fellow, and her translation work has been published in Harper’s and anthologized in Best Literary Translations 2025. Her poetry has appeared in The Columbia ReviewMidway JournalColumbia JournalPrelude, and elsewhere, and she is the author of the chapbook Elephant. She holds a BA in comparative literature and Romance languages from the University of Michigan and an MFA in literary translation from the University of Iowa, where she was an Iowa Arts Fellow. She has received residencies at the Dora Maar House, the Michalski Foundation, Translation House Looren, and other institutions.
