Cornelia Thomsen was born 1970 in Rudolstadt, Thuringia in former East Germany. She attended the 4-year apprenticeship at the Meissen Porcelain Company. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 Thomsen earned her BA and MFA at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach/Frankfurt. In 2006 Thomsen moved to Manhattan with her family and co-founded the Thomsen Gallery, which focuses on Japanese Art.
Thomsen works in the media oil, watercolor, drawings, and print making. Her aquatint prints based on ancient Greek mathematical ratios were recently acquired by the Metropolitan Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art and the MFA Houston.
Thomsen has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, and Düsseldorf and is an active speaker focusing on the separation of Germany after WWII and the role of women in society. The artist lives and works in Manhattan.
