Garrett Hongo was born in Volcano, Hawaii, and grew up on the North Shore of Oahu and in Los Angeles. His work includes Coral Road: Poems, three anthologies, Volcano: A Memoir of Hawai’i and The Mirror Diary: Selected Essays, published this past summer. Recent poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Harvard Review, Poetry, New England Review, Kenyon Review, and Plume. Among his honors are the Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship to Italy, two NEA grants, and the Lamont Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets. He is working on two books: The Ocean of Clouds, a book of poems; and The Perfect Sound: An Autobiography in Stereo, a non-fiction work. He teaches at the University of Oregon, where he is distinguished professor of arts and sciences.
